Christmas is definitely my favorite time of year! I love all of it from the family, to the giving of gifts, decorating, traditions, and of course, all the yummy food! Honestly it’s so easy for me to get wrapped up in all of those things that I could forget the very reason why I celebrate Christmas.
Growing up, my parents started a tradition with my sister and I. On Christmas morning we would rush out to the tree full of excitement and anticipation to see our stocking filled to the brim, and the gifts piled beneath the tree. We would be ready to dive in but my parents would have us sit down and take communion as a family. To be honest, I was not a fan of this. I was a kid who just wanted to know what was under all that wrapping paper. But now looking back I see the importance of why my parents did that. They loved showering us with gifts but they always wanted us to remember what we were really celebrating. What the WHY of our Christmas celebration was. And every Christmas morning I was yet again reminded that HE is my WHY.
Now I am married with a 16 month old baby girl and want to carry on that tradition. I want her to always love Christmas and remember it as a time filled with love, family, gifts, food but most of all filled with Jesus and the reminder of why we celebrate Christmas. I’m sure at some point in her life she will sit on the couch and just hope that our time of prayer and communion would hurry up so we can get to the gifts. But I know that one day she will look back on those moments the way I do. That they were the sweet moments when my Dad and Mom reminded us to stop and look at the face of Jesus and thank Him for all He has done for us.
I would encourage you that during this time of the year which gets so busy with many fun traditions to stop, gather your family together and remember what we are truly celebrating and allow thankfulness to overwhelm your heart as you look upon His beautiful face.
He is my WHY of Christmas.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
